5 Home Office Interior Design Ideas

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to no longer hassle with the long commute to your downtown office? Do you envision leaving your bunny slippers on when you make a sale, or having your hair in rollers when you need to return a call? You wouldn’t be alone. More people, now than ever, are in need of a Home Office Interior Design.

Why You Need a Dedicated Work Area

Why should you bother designing an office if the T.V. tray is working perfectly for your laptop? Because having a dedicated office space in your home will reward you with increased production, which translates into better use of your time and money – and that is definitely a reason to seriously look into a home office make-over.

Having a dedicated work space will be a mute point if being in it lulls you to sleep, or provides easy access to distractions, so it’s very important to not only focus on the functions of your room, but also on the ambiance so that you’ll want to be present, aware, and excited to be there.

There are many considerations to keep in mind when designing a home office – more than just whether you’ll have a spot to place your coffee cup, or even where the filing cabinet should go. You must not only create a productive environment, but a productive atmosphere as well. If you aren’t happy to be in the room, you won’t be present long enough to accomplish much.

Home Office Tips & Ideas

  1. Organization: If you can’t find it, you will be wasting time. We all know time equals money. Organizing is going to be key in creating an efficient work environment. Whether your home office is dedicated to just paying the bills, or engaging customers, you need to develop a system for keeping essentials in reach, as well as easily being able to find a file on a minute’s notice. There’s nothing worse than a client listening to you say … “I know it’s here, somewhere … “.  If organizing is not your cup of tea, there are plenty of products on the market that will help with a home office, or consider consulting a professional.
  2. Lighting: Proper lighting will make the difference on whether you close the sale with that customers – or make them feel like they might be interrupting your quiet time. Overhead lighting is most efficient and will give you ample wattage when needed for signing contracts and getting the deal finalized. However, ambiance lighting is also important as it will help you relax and feel comfortable in your surroundings. So, use a combination of both -add some decorative lamps spaced accordingly for a “homey” feel, as well as on the desk itself to provide more direct lighting.
  3. Furniture: More important than you probably realize, choosing the correct furniture will either leave you dreading going into the office, or it will encourage you to stay a little bit longer to get the job done. Make sure your desk chair meets all your comfort requirements. Give it as much thought as you would your bed … you’ll be spending just as much time in it, so make it worth it. If you have clients coming into your office, please keep their comfort in mind as well by offering extra seating.
  4. Decor: No matter what your style of decorating, you’ll want to implement it into your new office. For instance, if your home is decorated in an English Country Interior Design, then by all means, bring those colors and elements into your work space. It will create a smooth flow from home to office and bring your personality into your working environment.
  5. Accessorize: It’s your home office! Bring some “home” into it! Photos, wall art, clocks, and other personal objects that will make you smile and more comfortable will complete your new space. You’ll be amazed at how much a photo of your children laughing can turn an otherwise bleak work day into a much more productive and enjoyable experience. Your clients will love seeing your “human” side as well – it’s a win-win.

Putting the "home" into Home Office Design

Leave the Intimidation Behind

Don’t be intimidated with all the decisions that need to be made in a home office design.  Maybe you are a whiz at your profession, but perhaps organizing and designing your work space has you a bit overwhelmed? You know you’d benefit from it, but where do you start? Not too mention, how will you ever find the time to put it all together?

Consider hiring a Home Office Interior Designer who will transform your space into the workplace of your dreams. If you are thinking you can’t afford one, how much money will you be losing when you have to take time out of your busy day to mess with the drama of creating your new work environment? There’s an old saying, “don’t be penny smart and dollar foolish”. A home office designer is worth their weight in gold.

The design that strikes me most are those country-themed. I love the location of the plants – they give life to the otherwise neutral office design. It’s a small space yet very functional.

Think about function. To incorporate some colors repetitively to reinforce your design, think about function. Your desk may be better served with a green file organizer than a green vase. You can match your file folders and wall art into your color scheme. Especially if you’re in a small space, try to think about what you need to function before you plan your design. Otherwise, your office could wind up looking fabulous, but completely unproductive.
