Interior Designer Jan Hales

Discovering what life has in store for us is a wonderful journey all on its own.  Interior Designer Jan Marie Hales, owner of Jan Hales Designs in Birmingham, Alabama, knew her life path would involve Interior Design at a very young age – which has made her  journey even sweeter.

Jan’s ambition for Interior Design made itself known to her when she and her family ventured overseas on vacation. The discovery of “museums, culture, castles, and different styles of homes” planted a spark that would later ignite a passion for all things associated with Interior Design.

Knowing what you want at an early age affords you an opportunity to “try it on for size” before committing to a career that could steer you astray. Jan took that opportunity by designing spaces while she was still attending high school.

Whether it be a Bedroom, a Home Theater Room or a complete Condo, Jan knew that designing was something that tugged at her heart and pulled her life into a direction that eventually resulted in her attending and graduating from the University of Alabama in Interior Design.

The nature of Jan Hales’ interior design is simple yet sophisticated. Her designs are just what I prefer. In my own opinion, a room filled with a lot of stuff and decors is not welcoming. You don’t get to move around, which contradicts the main purpose of what homes should be. =)

In order to do the real creative jobs in interior design, it may be better to be an employee of the design firm or to operate in a satellite design industry. When you have your own interior design firm, the responsibilities of running the business often overshadow the creative side unless management, hiring, accounting and contracts are subcontracted out. Also, a lot of time is spent smoothing over client relations along with balancing the budget, purchasing and juggling deadlines.
