Private Retreat Bedroom Interior Design

Your bedroom should always be thought of as a private sanctuary, a place where you can step away from the bustle of the house and find peace and relaxation. Bedroom interior design truly reflects the inner you, where comfort and reflection are the most significant factors to consider. Starting with the bedding and working outward, color and fabric patterns come together to make your space a haven from the hectic life beyond its walls.

Bedding

In the order of bedding selection think first of comfort, then of the design factor. Heavier comforters are a necessity in colder climates, where they can drape well over sleepers. In cooler climates, lighter blankets and throws allow air to move in between the bedding for more restful sleep. Once the weight and function is decided upon, patterns and colors become essential.

Top bedding, such as bedspreads, will compliment the wall colors chosen for the room. Light pastels and calming tones with subtle patterns are universally inspiring, and when chosen with a strong color presence, such as yellows or blues, allow for more creative expression in other parts of the bedroom.

Wall colors

Matched to the tone and coloration of the bedding, solid colors of the lighter variety continue the theme of restful relaxation. Choose paints that are matte to diffuse sunlight entering the room for a warmer touch in order to reduce glare and hot spots.

On the converse, a dark color such as aubergine on an anchor wall works as a canvas for artwork and makes a statement. Do not, however, use the dark color as an all room solution unless you wish to sleep in a cave.

Inevitably, the bedroom will have additional focal points beyond the bedding, and the wall colors should be picked to bridge the color variations between these objects. Wall art, floral arrangements, and simple dresser knick knacks such as decorative brushes and photograph frames all need to be considered.

Storage

Depending on closet space, bureaus and dressers are a must in every bedroom. As practical as they are for clothing storage, they also are a wonderful opportunity to showcase design style and taste. Matching these dressers to night stands helps to move the design concept away from a central location, to a more ‘whole room’ approach. One thing to keep in mind, however, is the tendency for surfaces to be used as collection points for life’s little trinkets – the contents of a pocket empties at the end of the day might well be left undisturbed for weeks. One bit of advice is to incorporate a small dish or basket into a room’s design to deal with these little opportunities for clutter.

A closet is most certainly functional, but the design of the room should also flow into these spaces. Flooring and color combinations should move easily so that the essence of your bedroom isn’t lost once you open the door to get dressed.

Functioning areas

Depending on the size of the bedroom, consider creating a little oasis for relaxation. A comfortable divan or arm chair for reading can be a nice option when using your space for relaxation other than sleep. For many, a bedroom vanity is a must, and should not be considered a dressing area. This is a place that can not only be used for applying makeup, but also for writing or simply taking a personal moment for reflection. Pay close attention to how light enters the bedroom when situating these areas, and position chosen pieces in coordination with how the light changes during the day.

Lighting options

Small bedside lamps with unobtrusive shades work wonderfully for night time reading purposes, but a dresser should have a more significant, all-room light source for practical purposes. Try and stay away from ceiling fixtures and wall sconces in the bedroom, as these are difficult to incorporate into most bedroom designs and detract from the flow of a space.
