Comfortable Living Through Conscientious Bedroom Design

In the theme of taking a design project one room at a time, one space that should be at the top of the list is the master bedroom. This is the space you spend most of your quality alone time in, and it should be somewhere you feel comfortable and most personal. Your bedroom design needn’t be difficult, however, as long as you take it slow and focus on the stages of good room structure.

Comfortable Living Through Conscientious Bedroom Design

Start with the furniture
More than any other element of the bedroom, it is the furniture that has the most staying power, and by far is the most costly of your room’s aspects. First make your choices based on personal style – whether you are primitive, colonial, post-modern, or cutting edge avant garde, your personal picks demonstrate the essence of your overall style concept. As with any room design, stick with one concept- attempts to create a fusion space often fail simply form the lack of cohesion.

Color coordination
There really is nothing complicated here, as long as you remember your grade school color wheel lessons. Choose colors that complement each other, and are not too loud- a bedroom space is more relaxed than a kitchen or bath project, and therefore should be comprised of more muted colorations.

One great tip for a bedroom space is to consciously place a significant black within the room. Not that it should be overpowering, but a thick mirror frame of dark walnut or a decorative, patterned pillow will draw the eye and make a striking statement.

Fabrics
Unless you are expecting children to camp out in the room, here is your opportunity to integrate more delicate and ‘adult’ fabrics into your home. Crushed velvet, suede, and even satins can bring a touch of mature class to a space, adding a bit of opulent luxury where you most deserve it. Go with a combination of textures to infuse sensory delight within your personal enclave.

Spatial movement
This is your space after all, so a bedroom design should keep an eye on the practical. A king-sized bed is a wonderful thing, but may not be appropriate for an 18’x12’ Yankee Cape master bedroom where space is at a premium. Choose a dresser and nightstands with foot traffic in mind as well as morning routines, as the furniture is to be used, not simply placed on display.

Accessories
Accents help an area within a bedroom design ‘pop,’ but this is where many home owners need to careful. Once you start with accessories, it can be very difficult to stop. Do yourself a favor and chose a complimentary theme to match your furniture. For example, if your furniture is early American, you might accent with period shaker boxes or lace coverlets. Limit yourself to only a few, and if you find a great buy, replace instead of add.

One more note to remember is the rule of threes. For reasons only a psychologist can explain, items look best when grouped in threes- candles, stackable boxes, lace doilies… never display in fours.

Livability- Do you love it?
Once a design is in place, step back and review the results. Take a critical eye to each area within the bedroom design and ask yourself if you truly love it. If something seems out of order, change it – don’t settle for acceptable. Make your space a personal reflection that you will adore.
