About California State University, Northridge

The Interior Design program at CSUN offers a stimulating program of study in the design of commercial and residential settings. Students examines environment and its relationship to human behavior and study the effects of environment on people through the lifespan and across cultures.

The program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) which is recognized by the US Department of Education and the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accrecitation (CORPA) as a reliable authority on interior design instruction.

The Interior Design program features analysis and design of living/working environments that are both functionally efficient and aesthetically satisfying. This perspective integrates function and aesthetics into the design process and the generation of design solutions for residential, commercial, retail and hospitality, institutional, educational, and health care environments.

The curriculum assures that graduates understand human development, aesthetics, the history of architecture and interiors, building systems, codes and technology, business procedures in professional practice, and the development of graphic communication skills.

All students in the Interior Design program receive guidance from faculty advisors. The curriculum follows CIDA guidelines for an educational experience that leads students into promising careers.

Opportunities for leadership, networking and potential lifelong professional relationships are presented through student membership in The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), as well as participation in the programs annual exhibit of student work in which design projects are showcased.

Many internship opportunities are available, as Los Angeles is a design industry center. Internships provide valuable professional experience and may be obtained with interior design firms, the Pacific Design Center, or within wholesale and retail firms, furniture manufacturers, design showrooms, model home design producers and architectural firms, as well as through non-profit community housing agencies such as Habitat for Humanity.

Our graduates have found success as:

- Residential or Contract Interior Designers
- Showroom Managers
- Product Representatives
- Sales Managers
- Furniture Designers and Manufacturers
- Materials Designers and Specialists
- Lighting Designers
- Hospitality Designers
- Health Care Facility Designers
- Set Designers
- Fixtures, Furnishings and Finishes Specifiers.
