About Matthew Salenger
Founded in 1999, our studio strives to be a cooperative-laboratory (co-lab) for art and architecture, bringing ideas together, and blurring the line that would normally define one discipline as separate from another. Working simultaneously with studio, installation, and public art as well as residential and commercial architecture, creates a synergy that strengthens the concepts, ideas, and end results for every project we work on.
We begin each project by gathering information about an idea, site, and/or client values and desires. We inclusively attempt to build links between people, and also between paradigms. Our work communicates reflections of the individuality of each projects situation, and its relationship to its environment and community.
The foundering partners, Matthew and Maria, personally manage every project from start to finish, attending every meeting with clients and consultants, providing individual attention to every detail with energy and enthusiasm. With a growing accompaniment of excellent staff, we work hard everyday to make positive contributions to the built environment. colab studio continues to be one of the most innovative and unique studios in Arizona, compiling growing lists of local, national, and international awards and exhibitions, in both art and architecture.
Matthew Salenger was born in 1971 and raised on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Collegiate studies in history, art, and architecture took him to vastly different environments such as Washington State, Arizona, and eventually to the Architectural Association in London where he graduated with honors. He has a Masters Degree in Architecture and a minor in Fine Art. Matthew is a licensed architect in Arizona, and has traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East, the U.S., and Japan.
Maria, born in 1971 and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, obtained a Bachelors Degree in Architecture from the University of Arizona and a Masters of Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, and her architectural license in the State of Arizona. She has traveled extensively studying both art and architecture. Maria has been a member of the American Institute of Architects since 1999, and curated the AIA gallery for three years from 2000-2003.
