A simple, inexpensive DIY way to update the look of the bathroom vanity can be done with the use of fabric. Even non-sewers can create this DIY bathroom vanity skirt by using no-sew webbing instead of sewing seams and hems. The fabric is an interior design trick that will create a skirt that willl hide the ugliest of vanity cabinets or create a hidden storage place under a pedestal sink.
Measure the Bathroom Vanity
Begin the DIY update by measuring the distance around the bathroom vanity and the distance from the countertop to the floor. If creating a vanity skirt for a pedestal sink, measure the distance around the sink and measure the distance from the top rim of the sink to the floor. Add four inches to the length and width to allow for vanity skirt hem and overlap.
Take Measurements to the Fabric Store
Take the measurement along with you on the trip to the fabric store, just in case there’s any doubt about how much fabric to purchase. Choose a durable, textured fabric that will compliment the bathroom’s décor and help hide stains. The fabric vanity skirt will be easily removed for laundering, so choose a washable, no-iron fabric.
While at the fabric store, purchase self-fastening strips (Velcro) to use to attach the fabric skirt to the vanity and purchase the no-sew webbing or sewing thread. Purchase extra fabric and sewing notions if there are other surfaces on which the fabric can be used to help create a cohesive-looking interior design within in the bathroom.
Cut and Sew the Fabric Vanity Skirt
Cut the chosen fabric to create separate side and front panels according to the measurements that were taken, remembering to add two inches on all sides of the fabric to allow for hemming.
Depending on whether the vanity has one side and a front or two sides and a front will determine how many fabric panels are needed. Cut the side fabric panel(s) wide enough to wrap around the corner of the vanity by at least two inches and cut the front fabric panel to evenly cover the entire front of the vanity after the fabric is hemmed. A separate front fabric panel will provide easy access to the storage space under the bathroom sink. All cut edges of the fabric will need to hemmed, using either the no-sew webbing or by hemming with a sewing machine. Iron the completed vanity skirt panels for a crisp, updated look.
Attach the Bathroom Vanity Skirt
Use the self fastening strips to attach the side fabric panels first, apply Velcro according to manufacturer’s directions. Wrap the side panel(s) around the vanity’s corners, then attach the front fabric panel, making sure the sewn edges meet the corners of the vanity.
Inexpensive fabric trim, such as grosgrain ribbon, can be attached to the vanity skirt using a hot glue gun or double-sided fabric tape for DIY embellishments. Total cost for this DIY bathroom vanity update can be under $10, depending on the price per yard of the fabric that is chosen.
Pull the Look Together
Pull the bathroom interior design together by using the same fabric (or complimentary fabric) in other parts of the bathroom if possible. Make new window treatments with the fabric or add a 6“ strip of it to the shower curtain. If you have a chair in the bathroom, re-cover the cushion with the fabric. Anywhere you can use that fabric or even paint color that matches the fabric, in the bathroom, it will help pull the look together to create a finished-looking interior design.
